Here’s how it works—when incident sound waves hit the glass panel, they are reflected, transmitted, or dissipated across the panel in a flexural wave. Saflex® acoustic tri-layer PVB allows the two panes of glass to move independently from one another when impacted by a sound wave. The viscoelastic properties of the interlayer allow it to bend and absorb when impacted by sound waves and recover when sound is no longer applied.

Saflex® E series

Saflex® E series acoustic PVB interlayer system is uniquely formulated to damp sounds from engines, wind, and road noises, making this acoustic interlayer one of the most effective on the market. Saflex E series interlayer can reduce transmitted sound by 2 dB more in the high frequency range versus traditional acoustic interlayers, making it more effective at blocking high-speed wind noise. This is important for the occupant experience because, at highway speeds, cabin noise can reach a point where it effectively masks a normal conversation.

With acceleration, wind turbulence gains intensity, creating high-pressure zones at the base of the windshield and around the side-view mirrors. Saflex E series acoustic PVB interlayer, featuring TranquilGlass™ technology, ensures that these windows can successfully damp wind noise at elevated speeds, particularly in the high frequency range of 5,000–10,000 Hz. This specialized acoustic interlayer also provides sound reduction up to 4.5 dB over the 1000–5000 Hz frequency range.

TranquilGlass is a viscoelastic core layer that allows the glass-interlayer system to effectively dissipate noise vibrations while maintaining the safety benefits expected from laminated glass. As a result, overall acoustic performance is improved, especially in the critical wind noise region.
 

Saflex® Q series

Saflex® Q series uses an advanced, tri-layer PVB interlayer system to reduce noise level within the frequency of human voice recognition ranges by up to 4.7 dB versus a standard windscreen and up to 5.9 dB compared to tempered side windows in the 1,000–5,000 Hz range.
