Introducing Saflex Q Series Acoustic Interlayer
The demand for enhanced automotive acoustical solutions is being driven by increased environmental noise and the desire that a vehicle be a comfortable oasis where passengers can enjoy a premium sound system or a conversation without the intrusion of outside noise. Urbanization and the rise in noisier diesel vehicles contribute to the environmental sound level.

In response, Saflex is introducing our next-generation acoustic interlayer which provides significant benefits to laminators, automakers and consumers:
- Saflex Q series acoustic interlayer consists of a soft middle layer providing enhanced acoustic dampening surrounded by outer layers that provide the handling and fabrication ease of traditional interlayers.
- Saflex Q series acoustic interlayer provides laminators with outstanding handling and processing characteristics. Not only does it offer easier handling when compared to monolayer products, but its unique structure provides excellent performance and edge stability.
- Use of the product enables engineers to create vehicle interiors that are up to six decibels quieter than they would have been with standard tempered glass -- a noticeable difference.
- Our Saflex acoustic interlayer is a 'drop in' solution for automakers. For windscreens, the acoustic PVB is essentially the same thickness as the PVB used in a traditional laminated glass window. For other vehicle glazing locations acoustical laminated glass can be directly substituted for either non-acoustical laminates or for non-laminated (tempered) glazing. Automakers also value the fact that laminated glass weighs approximately 11% less than tempered glass of the same thickness.

Testing was done with a single production vehicle, under controlled track conditions using an Aachen Head mounted on the passenger side. Between these two tests, only the windshield was changed. Contact us for more data from actual track tests.
Samples of the new product are presently available, and laminator testing has demonstrated exceptional results. Commercial quantities are currently available.
Saflex Protective Interlayer
Laminated side glass made with Saflex protective interlayer can reduce wind and road noise by up to 6 db as compared to tempered glass. It also weighs 10% less than a piece of tempered glass of the same thickness, Laminated glass with an overall thickness of 4.0mm has been shown to be quieter than a 5.0mm tempered piece of glass. This 6 dB is achieved between 1000-7000 Hz - where the human ear is the most sensitive to wind and road noise. The reduction equates to an Articulation Index (AI) improvement of up to 10%.
Car companies that have used laminated glass as a NVH solution include General Motors, DaimlerChrysler, Ford, Renault and Citroen.
In addition to noise reduction, laminated glass made with Saflex interlayer also provides:
