Silence Ghosting with Saflex® Q Series HUD Interlayer

Commercially available August 2009

In today's market, consumers are demanding quality from every purchase. For automakers, a quieter vehicle cabin that incorporates hi-tech features can demonstrate desired value to buyers. Add increased fuel efficiency and reduced CO2 emissions to the package and you have the complete package consumers desire. Saflex Acoustic HUD interlayer helps today's designers' tackle all three goals with one drop in solution.

Let's face it. Consumers equate quiet with quality. A quieter ride is a more comfortable ride. And increasing a driver's comfort level while driving can lead to increased safety. Keeping the driver's eyes on the road is also tantamount to improved reaction times, and reduced vehicle incidents. Combine these needs with the increased popularity of Global Positioning Systems (GPS) technology, and the demand for Acoustic Head Up Display or "HUD" technology was born.

For designers seeking the most advanced HUD interlayer products, Saflex has introduced its next generation HUD interlayer, a product that uniquely provides the highest quality projected image in the market as well as offering the advanced benefits of acoustic PVB.

Since windscreens are made up of two pieces of glass that are not flat or perpendicular to the driver's eyes, the virtual image must be corrected to ensure that it is sharp and easy to read – think no ‘ghosting'. A Head Up Display system utilizes the optical combining characteristics of HUD interlayer to provide a single focused virtual image appearing near the front of the vehicle. The HUD display enhances the overall driving experience by allowing drivers to keep their 'eyes on the road' while still viewing critical vehicle data.

Through the use of a proprietary process, Saflex acoustic HUD interlayer is made with non-parallel surfaces to create a windscreen that acts as the optical combiner of the HUD system. With a cross section unique to each HUD system, Saflex acoustical HUD results in the highest quality projected image in the market and the advanced acoustic reduction of 3dB per vehicle.

Saflex pioneered the development of HUD interlayer solutions, and now further advances this technology with integration of acoustic performance. Our service and product knowledge are also unequalled. In partnership with OEM car designers, HUD display manufacturers, and glass manufacturers, we collaborate to ensure the smooth launch of each HUD vehicle program.

The use of acoustic PVB can allow some automakers to reduce the thickness of the glass used to produce a windshield, reducing vehicle weight by an average of 2.5 kilograms. This weight reduction equals increased fuel efficiency of 2.7 liters each year and reduced carbon emissions of 6.6kg.
